Six-year-old Tutor

I don't know exactly where I want to take my blog at this point, but one week into a new semester and my head is already reeling. I've found that by writing things down, they usually end up making sense (it's really nice when it happens instantaneously, but that's not always the case). So, I'm dusting off my old blog to record some thoughts that I find complex, interesting, preposterous, stimulating, etc. My program has left the Renaissance behind and has transitioned into the Enlightenment. Translation: I'm completely out of my element. We've ditched Michelangelo, Titian and Raphael for the likes of John Locke, Thomas Hobbes and Immanuel Kant. And speaking of Hobbes, you'll notice that this blog is centered around Calvin & Hobbes - one of the greatest comic strips ever created. As always, this duo will provide some thought-provoking company as I try and work my way through this semester.

I discovered very quickly in Mrs. Riley's Senior English class at WXHS that poetry is not my forte. I'm not a huge fan of writing it or analyzing it, but especially the latter. Sad day then when I had to do just that for my first tutorial assignment this semester. My professor had us read and analyze two poems by Abraham Cowley from the 1660s - The Royal Society and To Mr. Hobbes. Luckily, after working through them in class I came to enjoy them immensely. I'll go into some more detail in another post about the content, but for now, I'm just getting things started. I have much more to learn about this period and its greatest thinkers, but I've already discovered one of the beautiful aspects of the Enlightenment, or living in an age of Enlightenment. It's the fact that questioning life and everything about it is a very good thing. I started questioning myself today in a way I haven't really done before. This is not to say that I started doubting myself, not at all actually, but I started questioning...

I have loved your posts before, and I'm sure I'll love posts later . . . but ANYTHING that has a Calvin and Hobbes comic attached instantly becomes a favorite!

Good luck in your new semester!!
